911 Sorrow and Strength
(February 20, 2002 New York Post article by Georgett Roberts)
Anthony Whitaker knew the moment he set eyes on the remains of the south tower of the destroyed World Trade Center - Jutted steel, still erect with a sense of defiance, pointing toward the sky, refusing to crumble to the monstrosity of terrorism - that this was it. This remnant said it all.
"When I saw it, it hit me immediately. In my mind it captured the whole event - the jagged edge, the shape, the style, the look of it all," said Whitaker, a 37-year- old graphic artist.
"What I saw was this remnant but the way it was standing symbolically communicated strength and character. And somewhere in there you could see victory, good overpowering evil. Of course, you see the damage but at the same time it was also beauty in the form of a ruin," he continued.
Little did Whitaker know that this picture, which he appropriately named "Steel Standing" because in spite of everything, this steel structure was still standing, It just refused to go down," would be reproduced into a well-received poster that quickly selling out at art galleries around the City.
"I had no idea that it would turn into this. I wasn't sure that I would be able to communicate what I saw to the viewers. I showed it to a few people and the were drawn to it but that was about it," said Whitaker.
But Whitaker should have no doubt anymore. His message is loud and clear - as seen in the sales of his poster.
"This poster was created to memorialize this tragedy. It captured the event through photography which is one of the best mediums to accomplish that," said Whitaker. "This picture will help keep the memory of the World Trade Center alive. It stands as a reminder of this city and the world's resolve to overcome adversity and combat terrorism."
A Graphic designer and visual artist, Anthony Whitaker has a strong interest in all forms of visual art. It all started when he was a child taking frequent trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Arts.
"I'm so in tune to things visually. Photography is a great avenue of visual expression." he said. "I feel I have a good eye to compose and frame a moment, and also to give it an artistic slant."
His poster, "steel Standing" is a perfect testimony of his incredibly precise and in depth photographic expression.
Not one to be easily satisfied, the artistically talented Whitaker took his creativity a step further. Adding entrepreneurship to his list of achievements. Whitaker designs a clothing line, Valley of the Kings for men and Valley of the Queens for women, which he operate out of his Harlem studio. It's marketed through catalogs and local stores throughout the city. He designs are inspired by the art and culture of Egypt, which he says has been instrumental development of other art forms.
"I've always been interested in fashion because it says so much about who we are as individuals," Whitaker said. "It is that part of the visual landscape, an artistic expression in the form of clothing that allows us to express ourselves and communicate a message about who we are."
Anthony Whitaker also finds the time to hold down a full time job with a major utility company when he is part of a highly trained troubleshooting team whose main job is to look for clinks in the utility and cable lines and fix them.
That's no easy take. One has to be extremely focused and be very detail oriented in order to excel at this job.
So where does Anthony Whitaker get the drive, motivation and discipline to wear so many hats? Graphic artist. Visual artist. Fashion designer. Utility Company worker.
The middle of three sons, born in the Bronx and raised in Central Islip, Whitaker credits his parents, especially his mother, for being a strong influence on this life.
He says it helped from his character and gave him the basis for his work ethic.
"You know how you remember certain things your mother said to you? How they just stay with you forever? My mother told me I have everything I need to become whoever I want to be, and to accomplish anything I set out to accomplish," Whitaker said. .........
